Sun4c Systems
The second generation of Sparc systems. The same CPU's were used by Solbourne Computer in their Sparc sytems that run a modified SunOS 4.x called OS/MP. Last supported by Sun in SunOS 5.7 (aka Solaris 2.7).

Other Systems - Sun1, Sun2, 386i, OEM, etc.
Sun has also produced the Sun1 and Sun2 familes, based around very early 68000/68010 CPU's from Motorola, the 386i systems based around early Intel 80386 CPU's, along with some Cray servers and special system for the Telco industry.

Cobalt Appliance Servers
Originally Cobalt Networks, bought by Sun in 2000. Early appliance servers are based on MIPS RISC processors, later ones on embedded x86 processors. Support from Sun stopped in 2007. Current support by Strongbolt OS based on Centos Linux.

SunOS 5.x (aka Solaris [2.]x)
Sun moved to a new OS based on AT&T SYSV in 1990 with SunOS 5.x. Sun bundled an X-based graphical user environment with it to create 'Solaris'. All Sparc-based Sun systems have been supported.

Alternative Operating Systems
Alternative OS's breath new life into old hardware plus make better use of current hardware. OS's range from NetBSD and OpenBSD to various flavours of SYSV-based Linux such as Debian, Gentoo, etc. along with Strongbolt Linux for Cobalt systems.

GNOME - Open-source GUI from GNU
Sun offered GNU's GNOME graphical environment starting from Solaris 9 (aka SunOS 5.9). It is now bundled with the core SunOS distributions. GNOME is free, open-source software which is part of the GNU Project.

StarOffice + OpenOffice
StarOffice, originally a product of StarDivision, was taken over by Sun in 2001 and ceased to be a free product. An open-source version called OpenOffice continues to be developed (and for now, supported by Sun). Open Office is a direct competitor to the Microsoft Office suite.
