Sun Microsystems CPU and Memory Module
Compatibility Tables

Compiled by Craig Dewick

On this page you will find the following compatibility tables:

I'm in the process of updating these tables since there are a lot of table compatibility matches which are not currently shown, and a few unsupported by Sun matches which everyone except Sun seems to acknowledge, but should be noted. If you can provide more field-proven information to update these tables please email me with the details.

Craig's Sun Field Engineer Handbook Archive Please note that the best place for accurate data on Sun's official position regarding compatibility of RAM and CPU modules for various platforms is the Field Engineer and System Handbooks, which I now have online! The online handbooks are direct copies of the files off the CD-ROM editions of the FEH/SH.

If you have any information about CPU or RAM module compatibility which conflicts with what is shown in the Field Engineer and System Handbooks then please let me know...

More information is also required for Ultrasparc RAM module compatibility to update the RAM module table. I am also working on an Ultrasparc CPU module compatibility table, so if you have any info for this, please get in touch.

Special Note: I would like to acknowledge the wonderful support of Leslie Connally in updating and adding to the information contained in the following tables.

Please read the following Notes in conjunction with the above table:

  1. - The SM-30, SM-40 and SM-50 CPU modules have no integral SuperCache, and they are not recommended for use in any multiprocessor systems.

  2. - The SM-71 and SM-81 CPU modules require a v2.22 or higher bootROM. I have the v2.25 bootROM images for both SS-10 and SS-20 machines in my Sun bootROM archive.

  3. - SM-81 CPU modules are not officially recommended for use in Sparcstation-10 or -20 machines due to overheating problems resulting from a lack of air circulation inside the two styles of case. They are, however, quite ok in the sun-4d machines, and clone systems like the Axil S/420.

For full information about Sparc processors, check out the Sparc International web site. Also check Mike Spooner's Rough Guide to Mbus Modules for a lot more technical and historical informaion.

ROSS hyperSPARC Mbus CPU Module Table

Please read the following Notes in conjunction with the above table:

  1. - Hypersparc CPU modules can be used in 4/6x0 systems with the Ross v2.14.3H bootROM set fitted to the motherboard. I am not aware of any Sun bootROM versions that support Hypersparc modules in the 4/6x0 systems.

  2. - Sun's last bootROM version for the sun4d SS1000/SC2000 systems was v2.31, but I have no idea if it included support for HyperSparc modules.

Check out the Ross Hypersparc Mbus CPU module installation manual (in PDF format) for more information about using HyperSparc modules in Sun machines. Since 1998, Bridgepoint Technical Manufacturing has assumed the HyperSparc CPU production and support role from the now-defunct Ross Technology.

There are a lot of differently-configured Hypersparc CPU modules (between 1 and 4 processors, different cache sizes, and clock speeds up to 200 MHz per processor) which work flawlessly in Sun machines but are not officially endorsed by Sun. If you have any information about using these un-endorsed modules in Sun-4m machines, please email me with the details so I can add them into the above table.

Also check Mike Spooner's Rough Guide to Mbus Modules for a lot more technical and historical informaion.

This list is by no means complete and I would like information about compatibility of newer RAM modules with newer machines. I may actually split the Ultrasparc machines off from the remainder into a seperate table if I can gather enough RAM module compatibility info to warrant it.
